Changing the battery in an e39 is no fun. The damn thing goes in the trunk which I don’t mind. However accessing it is an exercise in contortionist gymnastics.
The trunk cover that goes over the battery isn’t removable, so you end up levering the battery in diagonally. Slowly lowering it works out not your arms as you’d ezpect, but your back. And then to top off this back breaking work, you have to fumble cluelessly around for the screw hole for the battery’s vertical support.
I swear those Germans are cackling maniacally in some Bavarian castle enjoying this. I mean what kind of fiendish designer from hell made this decision? And then approved it?

Battery replacement in my Z3 is surprisingly not as difficult.
Actually finding the correct battery with a male vent port was the real challenge.

Be careful! I once dropped a wrench changing mine and it arced from the positive terminal to the (very close) trunk sheet metal. Turned bright red and lit the trunk on fire!

Easier if you remove the entire trunk liner on that side, not just the flap.

Mines back there too, much easier to get too though.
